This website collects and indexes the works and writing authored by me, Carl Lostritto. I make drawings, images, and animations. I'll be honest—this website is in part for me. I've practiced long enough that sorting, browsing, and reviewing my work is useful to me. I also thought of this site as a design experiment. Projects overlap, relate to each other in complex ways, and it's helpful to think about tags verses categories. I wanted a backend that felt like a visual database rather than an interface. As an academic, my aim is to make my work as open and accessible as possible.
To that end, my secondary goal is to connect the things I make with the words I write. My scholarly intention is to generate knowledge, and I want you to be able to read about as well as encounter my work. My colleague in the UTK College of Architecture and Design, Everett Epstein, designed the visual interface and computational systems for the site based on the database I designed. Eddie Friedman developed the backend design.
